What types of plastics are typically used in making lamp?
Plastics dominate consumer products today and also become a popular choice of material among light fixture designers thanks to the advantages it offers. The materials meet almost any requirement, whether that is for impact resistance, temperature stability, chemical resistance, color aging, UV stability and durability.
There are different types of plastic. The typical plastic types often used for lamp making include:
- High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) HDPE is the most tough material and has excellent chemical resistance and good processability. It is recyclable and eco-friendly.
- Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is flexible and tough. It can resist temperatures nearing 100 degrees Celsius.
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is less durable compared to other types of plastics, but very economical.
- Polypropylene (PP) is also very durable and comes with very low toxicity levels. It's even considered as a food grade and contact safe material.
- Polycarbonate has clarity toughness. It is harder to mold than polyethylene.
